Wheat Allergy Symptoms

There are a wide variety of wheat allergy symptoms associated with wheat allergies. The most common ones are listed below.

Wheat allergy symptoms occur when there is a histamine response to wheat. In other words, it is an auto-immune response of the body to wheat. People may experience wheat allergy symptoms in big or small ways, depending on their sensitivity to wheat. Some people are affected so little that they aren't even aware that they have an allergy. Others, will begin to bloat or experience other signs, even after taking miniscule portions of wheat.

Food Allergy Symptoms

Common food allergy symptoms

If you have a wheat allergy and eat wheat every day, you may have become so used to the wheat allergy symptoms that you simply write it off as having some other cause.

Many believe that wheat allergies are one of the top allergies in the world. However, a true wheat allergy is relatively rare. Most people who believe that they have a wheat allergy, really have a wheat intolerance. In addition, because a true wheat allergy can have such a dramatic effect on health, it is usually discovered when one is a child.

The major difference between a food allergy and a food intolerance is that an allergy involves the immune system and is potentially life threatening, whereas an intolerance involves a digestion issue and is normally not life threatening.

Most Common Wheat Allergy Symptoms In Adults

Wheat allergy symptoms as well as its severity are different in different people. There are life threatening symptoms and non-life threatening symptoms. The most common life threatening symptoms are uncontrolled and unrelenting coughing, asthma or difficulties in breathing, swollen throat, and erratic heartbeats.

Some of the relatively minor symptoms are similar to wheat intolerance symptoms. They are watery eyes, nausea, depression, diarrhea, eczema and skin rashes, and bloating. If you do have an allergy, expect to begin experiencing symptoms beginning from as little as 3 minutes to as long to three hours after eating something with wheat.

Hidden Sources of Wheat

Because so many of our foods have wheat in it, people with a wheat allergy can find it tough to get by on a day to day basis. Thousands of processed foods contain wheat in some form or other causing havoc to the bodies of those with a wheat allergy.

Some hidden sources of wheat which may trigger wheat allergy symptoms are some baking powders, many gravies and sauces that have been thickened by flour, quite a few salad dressing, and even candies.

Unfortunately, for those with allergies, because wheat is such a relatively cheap filler which can add bulk to many foods, it will undoubtedly continue to be an ingredient staple long into the future.

Handling Your Wheat Allergy Problem

Usually, if you have a wheat allergy, you will begin to experience symptoms from a few minutes to a couple of hours after eating a wheat based product or some food containing wheat. However, the best way to discover, for sure, if you have such an allergy is to ask your general physician to recommend a food allergy specialist to you. The specialist can then give you a food allergy diagnosis to determine if you are, in fact, allergic to wheat.

The test is good in other ways also because if you have an allergy to wheat, you likely have other allergies as well. As long as you are being allergy tested you may as well test for all of your allergies.

If you do suffer from wheat allergy symptoms, you should experiment with eliminating wheat from your diet. But, it is won't be easy to avoid these foods since many unsuspecting products contain wheat. A dietician, however, may be able to help you to come up with a wheat free diet.

If you can manage to avoid wheat, you  may be astonished at your sudden improvement in health and discover that you have been needlessly suffering all these years.
